Zarasai is a beautiful town located in North East Lithuania, 3 km from the border with Latvia. It is quite small town as it includes just over 7000 inhabitants. Zarasai is located between 7 lakes on marvelous mounds raising the city above the waters. That’s why Zarasai town is called a City of Lakes as more than 10% of territory of Zarasai district is covered by waters. Besides more than 300 lakes, 8 rivers cross the settlement. Forests growing in Zarasai district distinguish for their beauty too.
Today Zarasai is one of the most beautiful Lithuanian towns which charms not only with its wonderful nature and distinctive history but also with plenty of cultural events. Didzioji Island of Zarasas Lake – unconventional space for culture where many local and international events take place – makes the town exceptional. The year 2008 was extremely important to Zarasai as the town was awarded not only the honourable name of the first Lithuanian capital of culture but also a status of a resort territory. In 2010 Zarasai district declared as the EDEN destination in Lithuania for aquatic tourism. It is not an accident that lately more and more guests from Lithuania and abroad visit Zarasai. The increasing number of providers of tourism services only confirms that Zarasai is a newly found place for resting. Zarasai – a town not only of the pure nature and nourished culture, but also a lively, open to investments and sustainable cooperation town.

Zarasai district municipality administration is dealing with tourism development in the district, promoting small businesses in the region, using the support of EU structural funds preserving culture heritage objects. The organisation plans and coordinates in the district -rural areas organised events-local festivals with promotion of local craft’s products, culinary heritage,local traditions,local businesses, specially related to tourism development, coordinates the work of local organisations: educational centre, sport centre, tourism centre, cultural centre, libraries, art centre and others. In the Strategic development plan of Zarasai district is the main importance stated for development of tourism sphere in Zarasai region.
