Known as “Porta della Maiella” (Maiella door), Fara lies at the foot of the East ramification of Maiella massif. The village is located in an extremely beautiful natural scenario formed by the Gole di San Martino (San Martino’s gorges), a tight cleft created by the erosive effect of waters, natural access to one of the most wild and impressive deep valley of the Central Apennine.
The Valley spreads for approximately 14 km and has a vertical drop of 2400 meters.
The presence of Fiume Verde river and its springs is of remarkable interest: over the years it has shaped the territory, creating a suggestive natural scenery characterized by high rocks faces and deep gorges, object of primitive cults and popular beliefs. The presence of the river has always been and is still an important element for the development of those human activities originated on its bancks, marking the socio-economic history of the town and boosting a tradition of high level in the production of pasta, so much that Fara San Martino is regarded as the capital of Pasta all over the world.
The origins of Fara San Martino date back to medieval times. The term “Fara” is of Lombard origin and derives from the German word “Fahren” (moving) which then evolved in Fara (borough), while the term “San Martino is related to the Abbey erected in “honour of Saint Martino, bishop of Tours. Even today, passing through the gorges, it’s possible to see the remains of the Benedictine Abbey – whose origin dates back to the end of 8th century – that decayed in the 1400’s and was buried by many alluvions, the last in 1929.
